This piece brings together ancient craft and natural symbolism in a piece that speaks quietly but profoundly about family, belonging and the values we carry within our homes.
At its heart is a hand applied eglomise glass roundel, a technically demanding process in which silver and pigment are worked organically into the reverse of glass, producing the luminous, cloud like depths that seem to shift from within the disc.
The circular form draws on a rich lineage of art history: Japanese enso and circular prints, and the roundels of ancient decorative traditions, where the sphere has long represented the universe, wholeness and the unbroken continuity of family. Emerging from and beyond the roundel is a life cast beech branch, chosen for its deep associations with wisdon and prosperity, rendered in bronze and extending freely past the boundry of the glass as though rooted in something larger than the frame itself.
Perched and in flight among the leaves are bronze finches, long held as symbols of joy and the warmth of connection within a shared home.
The title speaks to the works deeper intention.
An Augury is a sign, a reading of the natural world for meaning and portent. Here light passes through and accress ancient materials, and nature is cast permanently in bronze, to hold a family’s spirit, its values and its joy, in a single enduring object.
Each edition will be similar but unique in that the branch is lifcast and eglomise organic, therefore no two can never replicated like for like.
